Example Student SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION Portfolios
Anthropomorphic figures to illustrate human qualities
My concentration illustrates the story of a young girl as grows and matures. I used primarily copic markers and watercolors to create bright, saturated colors. The girl is drawn in an illustrative style that emphasizes her expressions and creates a whimsical, childish atmosphere.
In the first piece, the girl is at a critical juncture in her young life. Behind her lies a past of crippling shyness and pained isolation. Although surrounded by a crowd of young, boisterous children, she sees herself as alone. Feelings of loneliness and desperation manifest as a figurative hole in her chest. In the second piece, her toys and goldfish see her distress and cast a spell, sending her into a colorful, deeply symbolic dream. She enters a fantastical realm where the creatures of her imagination walk the streets, dreamt into solid reality. Guided by her goldfish, she discovers a dark secret about the beautiful place (#5). She allows herself to be consumed by a giant fish in order to release the dream world’s inhabitants from their chains (#8). The ninth piece is devoid of the bright, saturated color of the previous eight, creating a somber, foreboding atmosphere. In eleven and twelve, the vivid colors return as she surmounts the conflict. The final piece is a cheerful resolution: reality is once again depicted in the left side and the girl’s imagination is shown on the right. The whimsical tone that pervades the twelve pieces combines with the bright colors and childish illustrations to define an underlying theme of the power of imagination and the precious profundity of childhood.
